Canon characters are, as with most sites, some of the most influential members of Tortallan society upon Eastern Lands. While far from being the most important, these characters are by their very nature potential game-changers and plot-twisters. If you are interested in claiming a canon character, we ask that you take a few things into consideration.

Please stay true to the image we have created for these characters. Staff gave each of the Canons a specific "flavor" of personality for a reason, and we do plan to utilize these facets in the future.

A canon character will be considered "reserved" for 7 days once a member has created an account for them. If their profile is not ready for review by the end of the 7th day, the character will be considered free for the next person.

Current Canons

CAVEATS

When it comes to playing a canon, there are a few caveats and conditions you must consider before taking one of these characters on. In light of transparency, staff wants you to understand that:

Canons are at the mercy of the staff. This means that we have full rights to affect any of these characters at any time, without permission of the current player. While all characters are responsible for their actions, canon characters are more so. We can choose to kill them off, banish them, or otherwise remove them if we see fit.

Canons must play their role. If staff feels you have taken a mild-mannered, patient, loyal canon and twisted them into a deceitful traitor without reason, we have the right to strip the canon from your control and re-open them to other players. This holds to the above that we have these canons intentionally personalized. **HOWEVER, if we feel the storyline you, the player, has reasonably played out to support the change in the canon, we will allow it.

Canons must stay active. These characters are critical to plots more often than not, and inactivity of a canon when they are needed to move a site plot forward is unwelcome. Should we feel a canon is not being played actively enough - and we will give a warning beforehand - it can be removed or NPC'd by staff at any given time.

Canons are final. This means that no detail of the Canon provided - including age, magic, etc - can be changed. We will allow playby changes but only on an Approved By Staff condition. We also will not allow others to create immediate family of the canon prior to the character being taken, as we feel it fair that the member taking the canon has say in their family.

Royalty of Tortall

King Jonathan III of Conté
36 | King of Tortall | Gifted | Tom Hiddleston
Played by Icefall
Five years into his reign, King Jonathan III has quickly earned the reputation as the "Renaissance King". It is clear his legacy will be the encouragement of the arts and learning - a passion of his personally. The jewel upon his reign so far is the opening of the Royal University, but the opulent plans for renovating and expanding the Royal Palace and gardens strive to surpass that achievement. Though he has earned the love of his people and the bettering of his country, he faces a dilemma that has led to tension throughout his court and council. With a Queen 14 years younger than he, a Tortallan-born girl that has yet to give him a son, previous talk is starting to become bolder, some courtiers worried about the security of the Crown.
Queen Cecily of Conté
24 | Queen of Tortall | Gifted | Sarah Bolger
Played by Skysong
Originally from Rosemark, Cecily was presented at court at the age of sixteen, quickly enamoring then Crown Prince Jonathan of Conté. Following a year of courting, Cecily and Jonathan married despite opposition, both foreign and domestic. While beloved for her graces, gentle demeanor and charitable work, Cecily has yet to achieve the primary task of a Queen-- produce an heir.
Prince Baird of Conté
24 | Crown Prince of Tortall | Gifted | Jonathan Rhys-Meyers
Played by Jewelclaw
Second son, and often considered the third wheel of the Conté princes, from a young age Baird did exactly what he wanted. Despite being the current Heir Apparent, he has adamantly stated he will never inherit the crown and has become something of a hedonist, seeking his own pleasure and amusement above all else, much to the chagrin of his mother and brothers, which he often goes out of his way to vex. A gifted mage, talented swordsman and devoted history scholar, many believe that he could he an impressive political force, that is if he ever gave up his partying, philandering ways and focused.
Princess Kalasin of Conté
22 | Princess of Tortall | Gifted | Adelaide Kane
Pending.
As the only daughter among sons, Kalasin was born with the weight of expectation on her shoulders that few others understand - being a token of exchange for the Crown of Tortall to wield whenever it so chooses. Despite being the child of a strict Gallan mother, Kalasin is determined to break the molds of tradition, turning her sights on her half brother, the King, with pressure to give more options to the women and girls of court - the ability to be knights is not enough for Kal, as she has her eyes set on the University and all the potential it holds.
Prince Gareth of Conté
18 | Prince of Tortall | Ungifted | Torrance Coombs
Played by Moonsong
Gareth of Conté wasn't meant to be born. His mother, Queen Hildegard, was considered too old for children when she found herself... with child regardless. That said, he was feared to be born crippled or worse. While he turned out to be perfectly fine, Gareth of Conté is seen as the child of the Royal family and is often dismissed by the "adults". Just recently having achieved his knighthood - his only option, as he is the only Ungifted Conté by birth - he is struggling to find his place in the world.

Leading Figures of Tortall

King’s Champion Alexander of Blue Harbor
35 | Ungifted | Eoin Macken
Open
“Alec”, as he is fondly known by his King, was one of Jonathan’s closest friends and allies during their years as pages and squires. While the younger son of his fief means he will never likely inherit, this allows Alexander the freedom to be his King’s extended right hand, without other obligations. He’s known to be something of a prankster, and while diplomatic when necessary, he has something of a reputation for telling it “like it is” to those closest to him.
Knight Commander Rhys of Tamaren
34 | Gifted | Luke Evans
Played by Icefall
Only recently given the title of Knight Commander two years ago, Rhys of Tamaren has faced an uphill climb since. Despite being a well-known knight and powerful mage as well, his habits of shyness and court avoidance has left him mostly an unknown among the louder voices of Corus. This paired with his relatively low birth - half-Scanran, and only the second of his family to inherit the title of Duke of Tamaren - has forced Rhys into needing to prove himself time and again as the Commander he hopes to be. Nonetheless, it is said he has won the favor of his men, and the faith of the Companies that make up the King's Own - for now. He is powerfully Gifted.
Lord Provost Mikael of Stone Mountain
49 | Sighted | Mads Mikkelsen
Open
The third son of a cadet branch of Stone Mountain, Mikael began his career with the Provost Guard at the bare age of sixteen after deciding he no longer wished to be a squire to the Crown. From there he rose in rank from Puppy to Dog - in which he spent a few dirty years as a Cage Dog learning all the best ways to “encourage” information from those he had to question. He was only thirty when he became a District Commander, and at the age of 40 he was granted the position of Lord Provost by then King Roger, after the previous Lord Provost passed on. Mikael wields his truthseeing Sight with utmost ability in his line of work, and is known to be completely ruthless in cracking down on rogue activity within the walls of Corus.
Spymaster Naveed of Irimor
39 | Sighted | Santiago Cabrera
Open
Born of Tortall's most southeastern fief right upon the border of three other neighbors, Naveed is a noble of delightfully mixed blood. His ability to blend into any class and clique has served him well in his pursuits, having been the Spymaster of Tortall for the past five years - given the position shortly after Jonathan took the throne. Naveed is the second son of Irimor, and so has been allowed to devote his full attention to the position, proving himself and his cunning wit invaluable. He holds a respectful acknowledgement for the city of Corus and its Rogue Court, often finding them useful for information - one of the few Nobles encouraged to make such connections. Naveed is also Sighted, having been able to use his ability to track poisons and the use of the Gift with impeccable ability.

Ambassadors to Tortall

Ambassador Marcel of Jurre
28-30 | Ambassador from Barzun | Gifted | Jamie Dornan
Open
The son of the previous ambassador to Tortall, Marcel has lived in the capital of Corus for most of his life. Slowly taking over as his father's health declined, Marcel was appointed ambassador two years ago. Despite being in the diplomatic corps, Marcel is rather notorious for his short temper, and unfiltered mouth. Gifted, he specializes in listening spells.
Ambassador Barekbaal Eshmun
42-46 | Ambassador of Carthak | Ungifted | Idris Elba
Open
Well respected in the political circles of Carthak, Barekbaal was appointed Ambassador to Tortall at the beginning of King Jonathan III's realm. Even keeled and dedicated to his Emperor, Barekball strives to represent both himself and Carthak in only the best light. Married to a much younger woman named Kanmi, Barekbaal has one small child that was born since coming to Tortall and another one the way.
Ambassador Yosef Engan
25-28 | Ambassador from Copper Isles| Ungifted | Aaron Tveit
Open
The youngest Ambassador in the Copper Isles diplomatic corps, Yosef arrived in Corus during the fall of 334 HE, in time for the court season. Though from a lesser house in the Copper Isles, he proved himself through his own hard work and dedication, he did not get the position due to family influence or connections. Has been having an affair with a Tortallan lady since early 335 HE.
Ambassador Oleg of Gernot
68 | Ambassador from Galla | Ungifted | Anton Lesser
Open
Arriving at court with Hildegard when she married King Roger II, Oleg has been the longest placed ambassador. Growing older, he is withdrawing further from court life and there is open talk (and betting in some circles) about when he will finally retire back to Galla.
Ambassador Havva of Macar
30-35 | Ambassador from Maren | Sighted | Morena Baccarin
Open
Joining the diplomatic corps at a young age, Havva never wanted anything else but to be an ambassador. Ruthlessly moving up through the organization, she used any means necessary to advance. Spent 3 years as a junior staff member at the Marenite embassy in Tyra, she proved herself enough to be appointed as Ambassador in Corus four years ago. Sighted, she can see pregnancy and poisons. Is in a long term relationship with her assistant, Lale of Umut. It is an open secret that most choose not to comment on.
Ambassador Magdalena Russo
32-35 | Ambassador from Tyra | Wild Magic | Emmanuelle Chriqui
Open
Daughter of the current Duke of Tyra, Alessandro Fazio, Magdalena grew up surrounded by politics and intrigue. Well educated, she attended the University of Carthak, despite not being Gifted. She speaks Common and Carthaki fluently from her time there. Has Wild Magic with sparrows. Married, though her husband chose to remain in Tyra to run his family's business.
